Declutter your home

Let’s leave 2020 behind us and start of this new year on a fresh slate. We suggest a total home declutter where you can go through one room per week and just get rid of all those items that you don’t really use. Both you and the planet will be better off without all off those unnecessary stuff lying around. Now, it is important that you don’t just throw everything away, let the items you no longer need come to use for someone else. You can sell them, donate them to charities or organise swop days with your neighboors and friends.

One good tip is to start a shared shelf. If you have a shelf and a few friends who are interested in sharing and borrowing items you are good to go! This is a great initiative towards a circular lifestyle and is an effective way to make sure you don’t spend your money on items that you might only use once in a while. Check out Circle Centre for more inspiration.

One last thing, the whole point of this is to reduce the amount of items in your life so don’t go out shopping for a bunch of new things to replace the old. Consume consciously and responsibly.

Week 1 – Declutter your bedroom

The wardrobe is one of the main places we will find way to many items in our homes. A great way to declutter your wardrobe and keep it small is to transform it into a capsule wardrobe. The idea basically involves having a few concise pieces of long-lasting clothing for all weather conditions and situations. The aim usually is to have 33 pieces of clothing in total in your wardrobe which will give you enough combinations to last through out the year or at least through out the season. Make sure to include some statement pieces that go well for almost any look and don’t let trends steer you. Make your own trends! For some inspiration on how to get started, you can check out Caroline Joy’s website!

Week 2 – Declutter your kitchen

Start off with your fridge and freezer. Empty them out and defrost and clean them. Make sure to dust off their backside as well, this will reduce the amount of electricity they require. Before you put all products back, create a system to make it easier to keep track off your food. A good idea is to have one shelf in your fridge where you place the items which are about to expire. Then whenever you are decided what to cook for dinner you can have a look at this shelf and plan a dish where you can use as many of these products to minimize food waste. Have a look at Anne-Marie Bonneau’s site or Micaela’s blog for more inspiration and some quick DIYs on reducing food waste.

You can do the same with the rest of your kitchen. Empty out the drawers and capinets, clean them and organise your items. Could you give any items away that you rarely use or plan to transition into more sustainable products? Maybe you could stop buying disposable items like paper napkins, plastic wrapper or baking paper and instead invest in items you can reuse like fabric napkins, beewax wraps and reusable baking sheet. Make sure you slowly transition to package-free shopping. Get your grains in your own glass/steel jars, say no to plastic spoons and forks that come along with your takeaway.

Week 3 – Declutter your bathroom

Have a look at all products you have. Organise your items into four categories:

  • Products that I use everyday,
  • Products I use in special occassions
  • Medicine
  • Products I don’t know I need.

Let the products you are unsure about be on trial for a few weeks. Try to use them up and find out whether you want to include them in any of the other categories. The goal is to only have a handful of your favorite products by the end and not a bunch of random items lying around causing a mess. Maybe someone you know will be happy to get something you no longer use as a gift or you can get creative with the redundant products and use them for something else.

Week 4 – Declutter your storage

Lastly, go through all types of storage you have in your home, your cleaning cabinet, linnen closet, attic, shelves etc. Give away anything you don’t use and choose a few favorite items instead. Do you really need 20 towels or 50 games? Many things you can borrow from your friends or rent from different services the few times you might need them instead of letting them collect dust in the back off your closet. If you have forgotten that you had it, it might be a sign that you have a bit to many things laying around.

Start new better habits

The start of the new year usually involves efforts to start taking better care of ourselves through stop smoking, eat more healthy or start working out on a regular basis. Let this year be a combination of taking care of ourselves and of our planet. Have a look at the section “starting new habits” in our bucket list and consider what habits you can start changing this year.
